GORUCK Ballistic Trainers
Black / White / Coyote

To build their new Ballistic Trainers™, GORUCK took everything that works (and nothing that doesn't) about existing functional fitness shoes and combined it with the latest proven science on proper under-foot support. The result is one of the industry’s “most versatile and functional shoes for training in the real world,” according to head product developer Paul Litchfield (owner of more than 160 patents in his field).

The Ballistic Trainer’s 3X Support™ system is particularly innovative, delivering adaptable stability across all dynamic movements. The idea is simple: rather than having just one arch in your foot, you actually have three arches (the medial longitudinal, lateral longitudinal, and anterior transverse arch). And whether you’re sprinting, rucking, or weightlifting, you need support under all three of those arches to not only improve performance, but to help prevent common issues like plantar fasciitis and knee strain. The Ballistic Trainer offers this 3-tier support, as well as a scientifically selected 8mm heel-to-toe drop—a versatile happy medium that creates the best biomechanical advantage when lifting heavy loads (squat, clean, snatch) or moving more than 400 meters (running or rucking).

Each GORUCK Ballistic Trainer also includes a wide toebox for greater comfort, extra lace-lock eyelets to create a tighter heel lock, and GORUCK branding on the interior and tongue. You can check out all available sizes and additional colorways in the purchase area.

Upper - Dual Material Construction

A flexible, breathable warp knit covers the entire forefoot seamlessly, while the lace area, midfoot, and heel are built from two panels of Special Forces grade Ballistic nylon (1680D CORDURA®), offering protection on rope climbs with additional structure and stability in the midfoot and heel.

Midsole - Gradient Density™ EVA

The well cushioned forefoot area is resilient and flexible with optimal rebound for running, jumping, or performing other explosive movements. When lifting or squatting, the firm heel keeps you grounded on a stable platform, with the 8mm heel-to-toe drop maintaining your center of gravity for a versatile mechanical advantage.

Outsole - Triple Compound Rubber

A high-traction rubber in the forefoot increases grip in any environment; the shoe’s midfoot rubber is formulated from a rock climbing compound for the best abrasion resistance and long term durability (ideal for rope climbs); and the heel rubber is extra dense and tough, designed not to wear down after miles of running or rucking.

These are great multipurpose shoes
I bought these knowing nothing about this particular brand. I am very impressed with these shoes and they have held up very well in the gym. To be fair I mostly do weight training, not a ton of cardio so I can’t speak for running in them. Walking has been just fine. They are nice all purpose shoe that you can use inside and outside of training. They feel very comfortable, not too stiff but enough to feel supportive. No complaints.

Best fitting shoes
These are the best fitting shoes I've ever had. The way the midfoot is designed gives the feet plenty of support. These are not as wide as they claim to be, but when laced tight around the midfoot, the toes don't spread out much so the toe box width is plenty enough. I use these as everyday shoes and bodyweight lifting shoes so the cushion was a little too firm for a couple of weeks, but after broken in, feels perfect. I can do everything better in these, walking, leg exercises, even kicking up into a handstand has been better since I've started wearing these. I got the Black with gum outsole and was pleasantly surprised by how sleek they look in person (I'm not a sneakerhead so my standards might be low when it comes to how shoes look). I find that the laces slip a little but I don't know if they laces are slippery or I'm just not tying them right. The flat insole vs. arch support insole is best used for getting the right fit. If you have wide-ish feet like me, I think the flat insole will actually make the shoes fit better. For narrow low volume feet, you'll probably need to use the arch support insole. Shoes are true to size. I wear 9.5 men's in almost every brand and the same size in these is perfect. Would buy again.

My new favorite trainer
If you are looking for the stability of Nobulls in a much more comfy package this is it. Ground feel and fit is very similar, but the 8mm drop gives some of us much better support in certain movements. My only knock is they do push your heel up with the default ergo insoles. Swap them for the flat standard one included in the box and you should be good to go. I think Goruck could fix this with a slightly taller heel clip.

Beware - narrow toe box
So they advertise these as running a half size big. I normally wear a 10D, so I ordered a 9.5 (they only offer one width). Comparing them side by side to my Nano size 10, they are indeed identical in length. HOWEVER, the toe box is narrow. Maybe a 10 would be ok, but then they would be too long. I do not have wide feet, so I’m sure this will be an issue for most. I am very disappointed. They seemed like a good shoe.

Fell apart after a few weeks!
The fit and look of these shoes were great! Wore them to the gym about 8 times, and the sole peeled off! I thought it was just a fluke, and purchased some shoe goo and repaired, but a week later the other sole peeled off. Not great quality for the price you are paying.

Lifting shoes
These are lifting shoes only. Not good for daily use. Low arch support, not a large toebox. Probably would have good longevity but returned b/c they didn't have arch support or a big enough toebox like advertised.
