Ghost Strong Return Roller J-Cups 2.0 - Monster Lite

Manufactured by Rogue

We have partnered with the team at Ghost Strong to develop this exclusive Rogue-manufactured version of the Return Roller J-Cup 2.0. Our design keeps all the key features of Tim Grissel’s innovative original, including the patented conical rollers and multi-radius concave receiver that ensure each barbell returns to the front of the J-cup in an optimal position for the next lift. The only changes involve practical production upgrades in two different formats: Standard and Premium.

All versions of the Return Roller J-Cup 2.0 can comfortably accommodate barbell shafts ranging from 1” (25 MM) to 2” (50 MM) in diameter. The compact design makes it less likely that an athlete will make accidental contact with the J-cups when benching or squatting, and the roller feature enables much safer and easier centering of the barbell prior to lift off.

Ghost Strong’s original threaded pin attachment and 1/2” thick backplate have been upgraded to a fully welded, reinforced pin with a complete channel (including the front lip, bottom, and backplate) made from a single piece of 3/8” formed steel. In addition, for our premium model, we swapped the original zinc-plated pins with stainless steel–making these the first Rogue J-cups to use that material.

We have continued to use Ghost Strong’s extra-tall backplate design (complete with Ghost branding) to give athletes a large target to hit when re-racking, and every clasp is still tested to meet Ghost’s strict tolerances, ensuring a tight, secure fit on a 3x3” upright. All welds are filled in to prevent any sharp edges, and an extra piece of UHMW plastic has been added to the front lip of each cup to protect the barbell–this is in addition to the UHMW that Ghost has always included for rack protection on all three sides of the clasp.

Important: This version of the Return Roller J-Cups is paired with a set of 5/8” mounting pins, making them compatible with any Rogue Monster Lite Series rig or rack. This same design is also sold separately with 1” mounting pins for use with Rogue Monster units.

Key Features of the Return Roller J-Cups 2.0

Ghost Strong’s Patented Roller
1

Ghost Strong’s Patented Roller

Compared to the wider landing area of a traditional J-cup, roller-style J-cups are designed to immediately catch and guide a racked barbell into a more narrow, secure position, preventing unnecessary jostling of the cup or friction on the bar. Ghost Strong’s design, devised by Tim Grissel, goes even further than other roller J-cups on the market, as the patented conical rollers and multi-radius concave receiver ensure each racked bar returns to the front of the J-cup in an optimal position for the next lift, with reduced risk of accidental contact during a workout and much easier centering of the bar before lift off. Rogue has adapted this design with several new manufacturing upgrades to produce one of the most precise and dependable J-cups on the market.

Customizable Design

Customizable Design

There are a range of customization options available with the Return Roller J-Cups 2.0. At an added cost, the standard composite roller can be replaced with the Premium model and its extremely durable Silicone Carbide Coated Steel roller.* The standard texture black finish can also be upgraded to a premium medium gloss finish in nearly a dozen different colorways; great for matching the J-cups to a gym’s existing color scheme (all color finishes also come with a stainless steel pin rather than powdercoat).

*Please Note: The steel roller is built to last a lifetime, but it will gradually wear the knurling of barbells more than the composite option.

Great Product, Understand your Options
This is a great product; I recommend fully reading Rogue's Description and Reviews to make sure you understand what options will work best for you when ordering. As such, I wanted to provide some detailed feedback on my purchase. I have a Rogue Monster Lite Wall Mount rack in Rogue red. One thing that attracted me to these J-Cups is the built-in protection to ensure your rack does not chip or dent since I paid extra for the fancy paint job. I owned the J-Cup and J-Cup 1" sandwich versions before Rogue added rack protection. I used Plastidip previously to help prevent wear and tear with moderate success. These are very solid; the stainless steel pin makes them slide effortlessly when repositioning. Like other reviewers, I had one that fit perfectly snug and one that sat a little loose on the rack. I opened a ticket with Rogue Support, and they immediately sent out a plastic replacement kit with three size options that replace the rearmost guide support and some shims to use if needed. This fixed the problem immediately. (Some feedback to Rogue: putting little size markers on the rear of the plastic components would have made identifying the sizes a little easier.) I purchased the steel rollers; again, as other reviewers have stated, the trade-off is either cleaning the plastic off your bar or having marks on your bar. Not spinning the bar while racked is just not something you will ever do. I have a Rogue red Ohio bar; I plan on buying a stainless steel bar to use with these J-Cups and use the red one for deadlifts, etc. In the meantime, I bought a roll of APT's 3" UHMW (Ultra-high Molecular Weight) Polyethylene Tape from Amazon. It doesn't look too bad, and it resists the abrasion when the bar rolls in the cups. The way it sits in the cups, you only need to cover 3" to protect your bar when sliding from side to side. The portion where the bar rests on these cups is a little shallower than what I was used to with the 1" sandwich version, and the bar does automatically reseat itself in the forward position, which I really like. Overall, it's a great product; the shim fix from Rogue should get everyone back on board with this being a 5-star product.

Great fit and finish
After reviewing all the online reviews, I began to realize that most popular ones were 1-2+ years ago. These hit that sweet spot of features, quality and price. Glad I did because these are awesome. Game changer from your standard J-cups. The rollers really do improve the functionality of your rack and impact every exercise using a barbell. If you are looking, go for it. You will not be disappointed.

Poor fit
I purchased these to replace stock j hooks that were loose on my rack, sad to say that these are also very loose, top leans forward and pin barely making thru 3x3 upright. Love the concept of these just need to get the fit right.

Slick Idea/But Sloppy
I bought this a while back and never really paid close attention to specific quality. I noticed some slack, but kinda shrugged it off, but then the peg slipped through the hole on me just after racking my SSB after a squat. It caused the bar to slip off of the J-Cup and dump the weights off of one side. Luckily it was only 300lbs and only caused minor issues. I wish it was a bit more solid, especially considering the price. I’ve purchased many Rogue products. This is really the first one I’ve been somewhat disappointed with.

Not exactly what I wanted it to be...
I purchased these to protect my Uesaka training barbells gnurling because the stock j-cups didn't have UHMW on the front. Functionally, these work as advertised. However, when I rack my barbell, the collars have been taking a beating by the outer edges of the j-cups. The j-cups are all scratched up, but more importantly, so is my really expensive barbell I am supposed to be protecting. I got my j-cups totally stock with the plastic rollers. Trouble is I have to wire-brush black plastic out of my gnurling after every session because it's chewing up the plastic roller. I'm fine beating this stuff up, but that's more a note to say, if you go this route I'd go ahead and fork over for the steel roller. Sadly, I've just been pretty disappointed with this particular product and wish I would've kept it simple and gotten some sandwich j-cups instead.

Perfect
If you are worried about them being loose, don’t. They fit really tight. Puts the bar in the perfect spot every time.

So good I’ll be buying another set
These are a wonderful product. They replaced my standard J cups and fit much more snugly on my older RML-3 rack. So snug that removing them requires some effort. I’ll be buying another set to keep at my incline height. I don’t lift heavy enough to really need them, but there is something unexplainably nice about shifting the weight back and forth before a lift. I also like the knurled wear pattern that develops on the composite roller after use. i also have the camber blocks for these for the CB-4 bar but have found that I use my mono lift more for squats with that bar than J cups.

1st workout with the rollers
Started with squating using a bar with low knurl. I was and am concerned with the longevity of the rollers. I wanted to see what happens so I started with the light knurl. Squated 3x5 267.5. The rollers have definite marks but only time will tell. I use a wider grip than I should and the cups make it a bit harder to get into my same grip. I am now using a bit narrower of a grip and that's OK because that was my goal anyways. The cups are tight on my Monster Light rack, but they still can move a bit when adjusting the bar, not a big deal. The bar now sits more forward and is another thing to get used to but I found it to be an easy adjustment. The convenience of the roller outweighs any inconvenience the cup has. Next I moved to the bench press and switched to my power bar with heavy knurl. This is a game changer. The bar being in the front of the cup is a small but impactful difference. The roller has more marks but only time will tell how long they last. These are worth it. Hopefully the roller last 12 months before I have to buy replacements.
