SlackBlock

SlackBlock is a small, simple, but uniquely effective balance trainer that’s associated with the SlackBow training method. This patent-pending device is designed to emphasize one-foot balance training, an essential in all types of athletic balance. Few sports are played, after all, with weight equally distributed on both feet in a static position.

Training on the SlackBlock in sessions of just a few minutes, several times a week, can produce great benefits not just in sports applications and injury prevention, but in everyday life, as well, counteracting some of the negative effects caused by a sedentary lifestyle (couch sitting, office work, computer/smartphone use, etc). Better balance can improve a person’s cognitive function and focus just as it can help with precision, explosiveness, and agility on the field.

For safety and optimal results, the makers of SlackBlock recommend that all customers watch the instructional video provided with their order before using the block.

Great tool for strength and balance
Easy and fun to use. I keep it at the office and grab it to work on balance training when on a long call or meeting. It really works the little stabilizers in my feet, ankles, calves, knees, etc. I’d buy again.

Not for lightweights
Does not work if you weigh about 100 lbs. I popped out all the tubes to make it wobblier but still it was too stable. I have good balance generally, but was trying it with toe spacers to address bunion issues.

Great tool
I'm rehabbing a cranky ankle, and this is really helping to fire up all the little muscles in my feet and calves. Much more of a challenge than I expected!

a really good result and not much time needed
I've been using the 13" slackblock for about 2.5 months now and I recommend for just about anyone. I'm 6' 1" ( 185 cm), 176 lbs (80kg), 56 years old. Train regularly, regular mobility practice and zone 2 work. I found that my balance was starting to slip, just seemed to veer off a bit a times and the recovery was a bit bigger, so I started wondering what I could do. Listening to the Ready State Podcast I came across the interview with Jim Klopman and decided to try this. It has an effect quite quickly and doesn't really require that much time. I've noticed that my lunges are way more solid, I am faster up stairs, and overall just feel an improvement in balance. I also noticed when I stopped for 2 weeks due to a work trip, that my balance slipped, but a 4-5 sessions spread over a week or so brought it back. I've stood on a yoga block before and it's close to that. My foot is a 10.5 ( 43) and it just fits on a yoga block so if you've a larger foot or are heavier this is a better tool. While the yoga block fires many of the same muscles in a quite similar way, the slackblock has more range side to side so I feel it stretches and strengthens your ankle and foot in ways that would help if you almost turn it on uneven ground. As it gets easier, you can remove the cores to make it more responsive or simply add difficulty like facing a wall and tossing and catching a ball, which is from Jim Klopman's book. I'd recommend treating this like conditioning, and taking rest days, at least at first. It doesn't feel that tiring but I still think I overdid it at first. This type of balance works fires the so much of the muscle chain of the leg and into the upper back. You'll hit many of the stabilizers ( if not all) in the ankle, through the shin, really feel it in your knee, quads and all your glutes. The constant need to re-balance challenges so many parts and many small muscles you might not hit otherwise, I find it can help loosen up my lower back as well. This feels like it would help with any sport. That you'd be "faster to the ball", more aware where your body is in space and much more solid foundation through the foot/ankle knee when you need shift quickly.
