Product Description

Rogue’s Jerry Can Sandbags are inspired by the original World War II era jerrycan fuel containers that became popular training implements on American military bases and, later, among strength athletes. Compared to the original pressed steel jerry cans or our own HDPE Jerry Can, this model is a more space-efficient, safe, and versatile alternative, designed just like our standard training sandbags with a 1000D Cordura construction and a built-in funnel filler for go-anywhere convenience.

Rogue JC-100S Jerry Can Sandbag

Inspired by a Military Icon, Now in a Versatile Cordura Construction with Two Handle Configuration Options

Rogue’s Jerry Can Sandbags are the perfect implements for one of the fundamental, full-body strength exercises: the farmer’s carry. Available in single-handle and triple-handle configurations, these updated designs also enable a myriad of additional movements, including suitcase carries, chest carries, shoulder carries, overhead presses, swings, and two-person farmer’s walks. Just load up the funnel filler bag (max capacity: 100LB of sand) and find out what you’re capable of.

Jerry Can carries have been a part of military training for years, taxing the user’s grip and developing their core stability, balance, and full-body strength. Although the cans themselves were originally designed for a practical purpose (efficiently carrying fuel and other liquids), the long-term benefits of Jerry Can training soon became clear, and they’ve been adopted by a wide range of athletes and coaches ever since.

Our new Jerry Can Sandbags build on our original version and the Rogue welded Jerry Cans that preceded them. The reinforced, military-style 1000D Cordura construction is combined with patent-pending permeable internal baffles, which help the bags retain their shape so they’re always easy to fill. Because sand can be added and emptied at a training site, the sandbags are extremely portable, as well, weighing less than 2LBS unloaded and occupying very little space. Compared to rigid metal Jerry Cans or other farmers walk implements, our Jerry Can Sandbags are also significantly less likely to damage the floor, or your foot, when dropped.

*Please Note: Loadable weight of the Jerry Can Sandbag depends on the density and size of the media being used. Certain media may cause the overall weight of the bag to be greater than or less than projected weight capacity. Due to the nature of the fabric and the directed use, the Jerry Can bags may expand over time. These bags do NOT come prefilled. The zipper protection flap is NOT designed to be a handle. Using the flap to pull the loaded bag may result in damage to the stitching and is not covered under warranty. Jerry Can Sandbags are also NOT designed for slams or drags. Due to the nature of the fabric and the directed use, the bags may expand over time.

Benefits of Jerry Can Sandbag Training

Why Should I Train with a Jerry Can?

The main advantages of Jerry Can carries versus similar workouts are the ability to (a) quickly adjust and customize the weight load with filler material, and (b) to use the built-in handles as unique grips for a variety of one or two-person carry positions. As a functional training tool, the uneven and shifting load of the Jerry Can challenges the body's stabilizing muscles, improving core strength, balance, and coordination, with plenty of practical strength applications to everyday life.

5 Benefits of Jerry Can Sandbag Training

  • Adjustable Weight: Jerry Can sandbags are designed to be filled with sand / filler material, allowing you to adjust the weight according to your fitness level or the type of workout. Because of the large capacity, you do not need to buy several different sizes to train with different weights, you can just fill the bags with as much or as little filling materials as you desire.
  • Functional Training: The uneven and shifting nature of the sand inside the bag adds an element of instability, promoting functional strength and stability.
  • Versatility: The various handles and grips on our Jerry Can sandbags allow for different holding positions, accommodating a wide range of exercises, from farmer’s carries to deadlifts, chest carries, and shoulder carries. It can also be used as extra sled weight.
  • Portability: The fillable design makes this style of Jerry Can easy to transport; take it with you empty, fill it on-the-go, bring it back empty.
  • Full-Body Engagement: Many of the best Jerry Can carry exercises engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, providing a comprehensive full-body workout.

SINGLE-HANDLE JERRY CAN SANDBAG

SINGLE-HANDLE JERRY CAN SANDBAG

This patent pending design includes single handles on three different sections of the sandbag, allowing for a greater variety of jerry can carry methods, including: suitcase carry, regular farmers carry, double handle carry, carry on chest, carry on shoulder, etc. Previous versions of this design have been used by competitors at the Rogue Invitational.

TRIPLE-HANDLE JERRY CAN SANDBAG

TRIPLE-HANDLE JERRY CAN SANDBAG

The three-handle version is inspired more directly by the classic military style jerry cans / fuel cans, with 3 top-located handles. Ideal for partner farmers carries, this design allows two people to share the weight load by each grabbing one of the outside handles; creating the extra challenge of having to coordinate with another athlete. At the same time, the inclusion of the center handle still allows this sandbag to be used like a traditional Jerry Can by a single athlete. This was the same Jerry Can design used during the “Bob’s a Drag” workout at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

Key Features of the Rogue Jerry Can Sandbags

Quality Construction
1

Quality Construction

The industry’s best Jerry Can Sandbags are made from 1000D military-grade Cordura and include our patent-pending permeable internal baffles, helping them retain their shape through repeated use. The heavy-duty handles feature 1.5” nylon webbing supported by vinyl backed “X” box tacks. With triple-seams and binding reinforcement throughout, this design is just as durable as traditional metal or plastic jerry cans.

Portability + Built-In Funnel Filler
2

Portability + Built-In Funnel Filler

Like our other fillable training sandbags, the Rogue Jerry Can can be conveniently transported empty, filled at a workout location, then emptied again before heading home. Its built-in funnel filler design enables quick loading (filler material not included) with a secure Velcro closure. Athletes can easily customize the amount of weight they want to train with, as well, adjusting up to the Jerry Can’s max load capacity of approx. 100 LBS of sand / 40 LBS of crumb rubber.

Please Note: The bag’s actual max capacity will vary depending on the density and size of the filler material being used.

From WWII to Modern Competitions

From WWII to Modern Competitions

The earliest military Jerry Cans were widely used as metal fuel containers during World War II. In more recent history, athletes have adopted the design as a unique strength training implement, with the container’s customizable weight load and distinct handle position(s) making it effective for farmers walk carries, deadlifts, chest carries, shoulder carries, squats, and more. While Rogue has made metal and HDPE Jerry Cans in the past, we developed the Jerry Can Sandbag as a Cordura version of the same idea, with safety and portability upgrades and greater versatility (including potential use as extra sled weight).

Single and Triple-Handle Carry Options
4

Single and Triple-Handle Carry Options

The Jerry Can Sandbag can be ordered in a Single-Handle or 3-Handle format. Both options have the same Cordura construction, 100LB sand capacity, and funnel filler system. The Single Handle sandbag includes individual grip handles placed on three different locations around the bag, enabling more ways of carrying (suitcase carry, farmers carry, double-handle carry, shoulder, chest, etc.). By contrast, the Triple-Handle Jerry Can places all three handles at the top of the sandbag, more in the style of a classic jerry can, with comfortable grips suited to an individual or a pair of athletes (ideal for partner farmers walks).

Good for bilateral work; bad for unilateral work
Good for Farmer's Carries when you're using both at the same time and don't need to adjust the weight. Pretty awful for Suitcase Carries, because the bag bows out and is in nearly constant contact with your leg. When you're carrying both at the same time, it's relatively easy to keep them from bumping into your legs. But it's nearly impossible when you're carrying just one at a time. If you do both bilateral and unilateral work...or if you need to adjust the weight, this really isn't a good option. I have no idea why Rogue hasn't designed a product like Titan's Mini Farmer's Walk Handles!! I have quite a lot of hatred for Titan because of multiple bad experiences with them, but that particular product is awesome. C'mon Rogue, make your own version of this!! Those handles are infinitely better than these sandbags.

Nothing better for Farmer's Carries.
I have two sets of these, both filled to capacity with all purpose sand from Sakrete (comes in 60# bags, highly recommended). They weigh in around 110#. The ergonomics of these are near perfect. My workout partner (a Jeopardy! Teacher Tournament Champion, btw, and strong as hell) is short at 5'4" and has no problem with these, so their vertically oriented, slightly tapered rectangular shape can work for anyone 5 feet or taller. The way they concentrate the mass directly below your arm feels good. My only gripe is the handles are too thick to accept Fat Gripz; then again, they are thick handles so they engage the hand and forearm exceptionally well. These can probably be loaded to 150# if you mixed in lead shot (which I may try) with sand. Because of their design, they can be dropped on hard surfaces, which is such an incredible advantage: it allows you to walk or hold to failure -- just engage until you can't hold anymore.

Perfect addition to functional strength workout
I had started doing an outdoor functional strength workout by pushing a wheelbarrow full of 50lb bags of granite dust (about 500 lbs), and doing push-ups, cement bag curls and overhead presses. I saw these online and thought they'd be the perfect addition. They were. I really like the strength and endurance these are adding to my grip, legs, and back. I use them for farmer's walk, deadlifts, and shrugs. They're quite well made, and I expect them to last for a long time. I used a scale to check, and they can hold 100 lbs of dry sand. I used play sand from the home improvement store, and they filled easily.
